Always environmentally conscious, A-S Urethane Systems continues to lead the industry in helping to develop ECO friendly solutions. DURAGARD is a certified Energy Star rated insulating roofing system.
Q – WHAT IS SPRAYED POLYURETHANE FOAM?
A – Sprayed Polyurethane Foam “SPF” is a 2-part liquid that when spray applied, expands to 30 times its volume to form a monolithic, seamless, lightweight roof surface normally used in low-slope roofing systems.
Q – CAN SPRAYED POLYURETHANE FOAM BE APPLIED OVER ANY SURFACE?
A - SPF requires a clean surface for proper application. It must be dry, free of contaminants like oil, and properly fastened to the substrate in accordance with proper building codes. A protective elastomeric coating is required which is also typically sprayed on.
Q – HOW LONG CAN A SPRAYED POLYURETHANE FOAM ROOF LAST?
A - SPF has been used as a roofing and insulation material for more than 45 years. Foam roofing systems have proven themselves through comprehensive, independent studies to be dependable, long lasting, and very affordable. A-S Urethane Systems has been successfully installing foam roof systems for 15 years.
Q – WHAT ARE SOME ADVANTAGES OVER TRADITIONAL ROOFING METHODS?
A – SEAMLESS: Polyurethane foam is applied as a liquid, creating a single monolithic
Membrane that covers the entire roof. There are no seams or joints, which is often the source of the majority of leaks in traditional roofs.
FLEXIBLE: The foam can be sprayed onto virtually any surface.
LIGHTWEIGHT: Foam roofing typically weighs 50 lbs. per square, verses 800lbs for a built-up roof and 100lbs for ballasted single-ply roofs.
THERMAL INSULATION: SPF has the best insulating properties available for commercial construction today.
SUSTAINABLE: Foamed roofs require a minimum of upkeep, creating little waste and have an indefinite lifespan.
Q – WHAT KIND OF R-VALUE DOES A SPRAYED POLYURETHANE FOAM ROOF HAVE?
A – SPF has an R-value of 6.6 per 1 inch thickness, enabling it to provide more thermal resistance with less material than any other type of roofing insulation. It also produces an energy savings of up to 30% when compared to alternative roofing systems.
Q – CAN SPRAYED POLYURETHANE FOAM BE USED FOR OTHER INSULATING APPLICATIONS?
A – Yes, SPF systems are frequently used to insulate and protect a wide variety of special structures such as Freezers, Tanks and other structures. Similar SPF’s are used to insulate above-ground Jacuzzis, food and water coolers, and walk-in freezers.
Q – CAN SPRAYED POLYURETHANE FOAM BE USED FOR WATERPROOFING?
A – Yes, SPF is perfect for many different waterproofing applications. The foam acts as an air barrier, preventing moisture infiltration. Even when the top coat of a foam roofing system is damaged, the underlying foam will keep the roof from leaking. If a penetration does occur all the way through the foam layers, the water infiltration will be isolated only to the area where the membrane has been penetrated. Small penetrations can be repaired easily with an elastomeric caulk, reinstating the integrity of the roofing system.
Q – WHAT ARE ELASTOMERIC COATINGS?
A – SPF has to be protected from exposure to the sun’s ultra-violet radiation and moisture. Top coatings help to protect and seal the foam from damage. A polyurethane foam roof will not be susceptible to the damaging effects of expansion and contraction during the course of a day due to temperature changes. The coating must be able to stretch with the foam and return to its normal shape later. The coating must be tough enough to withstand local climatic conditions as well as foot traffic. In addition, the coating must be able to protect the foam from a build up of moisture vapor. Finally, the combination of foam and coating has to pass the applicable code requirements for exterior and interior fire exposure. The systems should be rated Class A by ASTM E-108 or an equivalent testing method.
Q – CAN I WALK ON MY SPF ROOF?
A – Yes, SPF roofs can be walked on within 24 hours. Inform any tradesmen who do any work on your SPF roof to notify us prior to doing any work in order to maintain your warranty.
Q – IS DURAGARD ROOF COATING ENERGY STAR APPROVED?
A – Yes, our DURAGARD coatings have been tested and approved to ASTM standards for Initial Solar Reflectance and (3) year reflectance requirements.
Q – IS DURAGARD ROOF COATING APPROVED BY THE COOL ROOF RATING COUNCIL?
A – Yes, our DURAGARD coatings have been tested and approved to ASTM standards and is listed by the CRRC (Cool Roof Rating Council) for Solar Reflectance of 83% and Thermal Emittance of 92%.
